This illustration reflects the culture of working and commuting in Indonesia, especially in large cities like Jakarta or other big city in Indonesia, where daily routines often blur the line between movement and stillness. The crowded public transport becomes a shared space of transition where many people are physically together, yet emotionally distant.
The piece was inspired by observing my older sister’s experience of working away from home, and by the quiet tensions that come with leaving, adapting, and enduring repetitive journeys. Through this scene, I wanted to capture the feeling of being present in a place, while mentally carrying another caught between responsibility, distance, and routine.
Recognition
This illustration was shortlisted at Booooooom Illustration Awards 2025 in the Personal category.
The shortlisted works were selected by guest judges, with the margins between winners and shortlisted submissions described as razor-thin.
